On this day in 1974 Steven Spielberg began shooting Peter Benchley’s Jaws in Martha’s Vineyard.   Plagued by recurrent problems with the mechanical great white(s), the 58-day shooting scheduled more than doubled and the plug was nearly pulled more than once.

Life would never have been the same without the original Jaws.
