As unlikely as it might sound, we’re entering one of my favorites times to be on the water back home – those weeks (pending the year) that the rivers run clear and cold before they ice up completely in the depth of the winter freeze.

The combination of low river flows, the winter sunlight, unique combinations of anchor and shore ice and who knows what the hell else has made for some interesting river images over the years.

Yep, it’s cold and you’ll need to take some extra precautions with gear. (Personal best minor frostbite trip – snapping the images above on the Gallatin…..)

Get out there and see a river world most fly fishers never even imagine. Then you’ll really appreciate that bonefish trip to Belize coming up……

A buddy and I just spent three days fighting the weather in search of big trout on a local lake. Some success and some failure later, this image was one of the results. He took it with the camera on his smartphone. I did a little post processing and quite like the way it turned out. It was just as cold as it looks.

The Lamar River valley in the northeastern quadrant of Yellowstone is an awesome place any time of year, though fall is one of my favorite times to be there, particularly headed up the Lamar drainage as the hoards don’t make it that far.

Fishing in this sector of the Park is almost always finis by the second week of October, though we’ll still kick around the Lamar one last time about now. Damn, wish I was there right now…..

Took this on a recent trip. I’m not sure where the blue came from other than maybe the sky reflecting of the surface water. Anyway, I kind of like the effect.

I’m not sure what it is about water moving over a freestone river bottom that I find so mesmerizing.

The fascination well predates my introduction to fly fishing and the opportunity to live in areas where freestoners are the norm.

Growing up in country flatter than a pancake and dry as a bone did inspire a fascination with water, though pretty much the only moving water I remember as a kid came from a hot hose roasting in the sun or ran in the gutter after a rare but rabidly coveted thunderstorm.

Stepping into a free flowing stream or river transports most of us to a place where stock market drops, unemployment, flash mobs and politics don’t matter for a few hours.

Even on relatively slow moving water there are enough sounds of the river to gently push the clutter of the day out of your stream of consciousness until you adjust back to the pace of river life.

For me, the Firehole is one of those waters with an intriguing bed and typically pristine flows that make time stand still.

Beam me to the Firehole, Scotty.
