Here’s one from the “classics” file that somewhat ironically came up in a discussion this week chatting about menu options for a little get together I’d been asked to help with.

Our compadre, the host, is now a very busy Louisiana-based fly fishing guide, and while he has embraced all the amazing cuisine of the Louisiana Gulf Coast with gusto, he and his lovely wife went to college (to earn finance and engineering degrees respectively) in Tuscaloosa, where The Alabama Slammer is apparently still deemed to be a rite of passage.

He said something about entertaining “a bunch of damn Yankees” this next week and wanting to share a part of his Southern (educational) heritage, Slammers were on the menu. Despite spending roughly a year in Alabama a few years back, I had to admit I’d never had the pleasure of one.

Three days later an express-mailed care package showed up in the box containing the ingredients below. The generosity of Southern fly fishers never ceases to amaze.

Cheers.

1 ounce Southern Comfort
1 ounce Sloe gin
1 ounce Amaretto
2 ounces orange juice

Garnish: Orange wheel, cherry

Pour everything into an ice-filled shaker and shake, shake, shake.

Strain into an ice-filled (highball) glass, garnish, and go to it.

Enjoy.
