Here’s an adult beverage for tax week that’s named after something we all wish we had more of – The Witty Comeback.

Personally I specialize in witty comebacks formulated hours if not days after a particular situation or encounter demanded such a retort, and I have to modestly admit I can be damned crafty with a stinging comeback given enough time.

Truth be told I was in the nearby adult beverage warehouse this week searching for a particular liqueur when I stumbled across several ‘Amaro’ liqueurs, the bitter-sweet, often caramelized and syrupy Italian herbal liqueur. Though the connection escapes me at the moment, the Averna label jumped out and grabbed me – turns out it’s named after the inventor of the amaro genre, Salvatore Averna, an inventive Sicilian working back in the 1860’s.

Chatting up the bartender there she suggested trying The Witty Comeback given it’s made with things most of us have around the house, save for the Averna Amaro, and you can have a batch of ginger simple syrup whipped up in no time.

2 ounces rye whiskey
1/2 ounce Averna amaro
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce ginger simple syrup
Garnish: orange twist

Fill a shaker with ice and add the rye, Averna, ginger syrup and fresh lemon juice; shake, shake, shake until frosty.

Strain into an ice-filled glass, garnish with the orange twist.

Enjoy.
