Two groups are working hard to call attention to the risk pending for Montana’s beloved Smith River; both could use your support in calling attention to what some are calling “another Pebble Mine” debacle.

We talk to people from around the country just about every day who say they’d like to help preserve and protect rivers but don’t know where and how to get started. Getting your hands dirty with a local project is probably always best, but adding your voice to growing groups with a goal of nudging leadership (in this case Montana’s Governor Steve Bullock) to protect iconic regional waterways is damned helpful as well.

Save Our Smith

We love their website tagline: The Smith River is not a location for another failed mining experiment. That’s their image above and you can sign their petition by clicking on the petition link on the one page site (the jump menu takes you right to the petition register).

American Rivers

American Rivers is sponsoring a drive on Take Action to protect Montana’s Smith River also; they’re looking for 10,000 signature to send on to Montana Governor Steve Bullock. We’re for one deeply appreciative of their team calling attention to the risks facing the Smith these days.

Does it help to sign virtual petitions? We’re naive enough to think it does, particularly as numbers of folks involved reach masses large enough to tip the scales of reason teetering in politicians’ minds. For those of us bound to the desk today, it also a way to reach out and think about something nifty in the natural world, even if only for two or three minutes.

Let’s help save the Smith today.
