Big Bugs

in Flies

Last weekend as part of a birthday celebration, I took Kaitlyn and her family out fishing.  It was Kaitlyn’s third time fishing, and her parents hadn’t been out in probably 15 years.  It was a really good time and it wasn’t even all that crowded out on the water.  Which for a beautiful spring Saturday in May is freaking amazing.  Anyway…

Walking back to the car we passed under Varney Bridge.  Taking up the rear of the group I noticed Kaitlyn’s mom brush what looked like a big bug off the bridge support and into the water.  It sure looked like… But could it be… Hurriedly scooping it up I beheld this:

salmonfly

Yup, that is what it looks like.  The first one of the year for me and to my knowledge the first one anyone has seen in the area this year.  It is still way, way early for the Salmonflies and they won’t be showing up in force for many weeks yet.  However, this has been a really warm and strange spring and a lot of hatches are happening a whole lot earlier this year than most…  Just something to think about.

More to come.
