Yes indeed, New Mexico’s SB 226 is STILL a river access hot potato.

Digging around for a bit of news today on the campaign to urge New Mexico Governor Martinez to veto SB 226, the last-minute, terrible-idea bill starting New Mexico down the road to river and stream access hell, turned up something interesting.

The bill was supposed to have been signed by Gov. Martinez on Friday the 27th after further scrutiny and comment.

There were suggestions floating around this morning the bill was being held further, and indeed via a call just now to the Governor’s office I’ve confirmed the bill has NOT been signed as of roughly 1240 CDT.

Input from fishers around the country appears to be having a genuine impact; if you’ve not called – please call today – 30 seconds of your time adds to a meaningful cumulative impact.

CALL THE GOVERNOR RIGHT NOW AND TELL HER TO (PLEASE) VETO SB 226.THEY ARE TALLYING VOTES IN THE OFFICE, AND YOUR 30-SECONDS MATTERS!

Kris Olsen of the Utah Stream Access Coalition wrote a colorful opinion piece for the Albuquerque Journal last week detailing the pains and travails Utah has experienced trying to repeal their legislative river access disaster over the past few years.

Kris was right – the West is indeed watching this one unfold.

Please make the call.
