March

February is over, thank God.  I’m always glad to get that month out of the way.  Once you hit March the days get longer, you realize good BWO fishing is a month away, and summer is just a few months behind that.  There is usually still a lot of winter left but it seems more bearable in March.  Daylight savings time is this weekend, giving us even more sunshine after working hours. Ahh….

This year’s February wasn’t too bad from a weather standpoint, at least out here in the West.  Normally it’s cold and snowy and leads to severe cases of cabin fever.  This year it was warm and sunny.  Hell, I think it only snowed a couple of times in Bozeman all month.  It’s on those years I’m especially glad to see March roll around.

March is a month to seriously start thinking about fishing for the year.  It’s the month when you can see over the horizon of the long winter to the months of beautiful weather and big fish.  This is the time when fishing trips get planned, gear gets maintained, and you really start to look at your fly boxes and tie to fill in the holes.  If you’ve been slacking on tying all winter, better get it in gear.  It won’t be too much longer and you’ll be out fishing instead of tying flies.

Let’s not forget the fishing in March.  It can be just spectacular.  Midges are out and fish are eating them off the top.  Nymphing can produce lots and lots of fish.  Often the first really good streamer day happens.  And there is hardly ever anybody on the water.  Go out and stretch your legs and work off a bit of that cabin fever.

March is here.  Enjoy it.
