Why I Fish: Wilderness

Take a look at that sign.  What’s the biggest, boldest word on it?  Wilderness.

Fly fishing is something special in that it can take you to some truly wild places.  Sure, Bear Trap isn’t a true “wilderness” in the sense that most of us think of it, but you get my point.  As the world rapidly advances toward a more connected, more civilized place, it’s good to know there are still places your cell phone doesn’t work.  I use my phone a lot, admittedly way too much.  Checking it and seeing the little “No Signal” icon is damned refreshing.

Unplug.  Get away from calls, texts, social media, emails.  Take a moment to look up from the phone in your hands and notice the wondrous world we are lucky enough to live in.  Go take a walk by some water in a place with no roads.  At that point the fishing is purely secondary.  Sit on the bank and just watch the river flow by.  You’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle the so called real world.  I might argue that the real world is the one in the wilderness by the river, free of mindless distractions and shared with a few choice friends.  We only get a glimpse of it now and then, but that glimpse is enough to keep us going through all the noise until we can see it again.

A nice side effect of being in those wild places is that the fishing is usually great…  Try it in this coming year, you’ll like it.
