Thirsty Thursday: The Pineapple Chalice

Some things just work out.  Like a pineapple being the perfect shape to hollow out and drink from.  Sure, we’ve all seen the brochures and commercials of people doing this in tropical resorts.  It fits there.  But how about on the Missouri River on a cloudy, rainy, cold day?

Ever since I first posted the Green Snapper on here back in July, a few of us at the shop had this idea of drinking those out of pineapples.  It fit perfectly, as a large part of a Green Snapper is pineapple juice.  Sadly, Brantley moved away before we could make it happen.  So when Steve and I planned a trip to the Mo last Sunday we knew we had to do it.  The first thing Brantley knew about it was this picture I sent him:

Holy sh*t indeed.  As far as we know, Steve and I are the first people to drink gin drinks out of a Pineapple Chalice on the Missouri.  A dubious honor, but a first is a first.

If we had been thinking, we would have brought something to scoop out the rest of the pineapple once the gin ran out.  (We only hollowed out about half of the pineapple to start with).  After a few hours of holding booze, it probably would have been quite good.  As it was though, it performed very well.  We’ll definitely be doing that again.

Early that morning I had made a full pitcher of Green Snapper.  But about 3/4 of the way through the float, it was pretty much gone.  It’s amazing how easy it is to drink a somewhat large quantity of something when you’re using a pineapple chalice.  We knew it was working when this happened with the first fish of the day:

Nothing like a tropical fruit filled with gin to make a cold, wet, rainy, miserable day on the Missouri into a good one.
