As I write this Saturday morning, it’s a cosy 57 degrees. I’ve already downed two cups of coffee, submitted a magazine piece, and edited pictures from yesterday’s two photo sessions. I broke out my Patagonia fleece for the first time in months, and a candle is burning on the table next to me.

In short, it’s a good day.

It’s been a good week, really. Busy as hell, but that’s the way we like them. SWMBO was in town for the Orvis manager’s meeting, and I was able to catch up with her a few late nights, talking outside on the hotel patio and watching the nearly full moon wheel overhead. Not a bad place for familial discussion. The managers had one afternoon to play, and I was able to escape the office and watch her undertake a wingshooting course.

You know you have a good mom when she gets giddy over shooting clays.

Escaped the office once more yesterday morning to take a product development team fishing on the nearby Equinox Pond. Orvis friend Jackie volunteered to help out, and we both rowed around four produce developers for the morning, offering a bit of casting instruction and dodging flying nymph rigs. Both boats landed fish, a few lightbulbs came on for the product side of things, and people had fun. Best part of the day? Getting to row. I miss rowing.

The rest of the week has been a mad mix of work, writing, and a wee bit of photography. After work yesterday, I ran down to a local creek, the Roaring Branch, to shoot a few fly box product shots for an incoming Gear Junkie review. The light was lovely, the box photographed well, and I think I was grinning stupidly the entire time. Sometimes work is just damn fun.

I was stoked to see a short piece come out in the latest issue of The Fly Fish Journal, featuring more tales from last summer in Craig. Thanks to the team at TFFJ for their design expertise… always a pleasure working with those guys.

In other news, the freelance world is crazy busy, and most nights consist of the oh-so-exciting coming home from work and writing / editing photos / batching photos / wishing for more coffee. I did just slate my first UK article and photo essay (coming next spring!) which has been a decided highlight for the week.

Next weekend I’ll be covering the Game Fair at Orvis Sandanona; look for “sporting life” images coming your way soon. The week after, I’m joining a group of coworkers for a weekend of fishing the Ausable in the Adirondacks… hoping to catch some strong fall color. Foliage, I’ve learned, is the correct term in the northeast. (I keep having various members of the group come up to me and ask if I’m ok that I’m the only girl in the group. I just grin; it’s nothing new. Thoughtful crew, these Orvis folks.)

Definitely looking forward to some cosy, rainy days this fall to just settle in and write. Hope the rest of you are out fishing, playing, and enjoying the fall this weekend. I have a feeling winter will be hard upon us soon.
