Chi Wulff’s Thirsty Thirsty Thursday 19 June: Coffee – The CORTICA Mug and Cool Brew

in Thirsty Thursday

Fly fishing man and woman do not live by adult beverages alone. In fact, coffee might just be more of a friend to the year round fisher than other libations so oft mentioned and visualized in fly fishing media.

Our famdamily unit (now with members living in every time zone in the continental US) remains a prodigious consumer of coffee, and to the person still argues (among other things) that Montana Coffee Traders (Flathead Valley, we heartily favor their cafe in Columbia Falls) is one of the very best coffee roasters in the country.

That said, we’ve recently come across two coffee related products coffee lovers will be interested in…

The CORTICA Mug

While most coffee connoisseurs don’t think of Montana when it comes to coffee, a fellow Montanan has designed one of the best looking travel coffee mugs we’ve seen in a long time – The CORTICA mug.

Inventor / designer Robert Knox emailed us a few weeks ago about his Kickstarter project; we’re intrigued and in. You probably want to look at this one too. We’ve asked Robert for an interview and should have that up shortly.

CoolBrew

CBcutWe’ve recently received some samples to play with from CoolBrew, the original cold-brewed, natural, fresh coffee concentrate created in 1989 by the late pharmacist and renaissance man Phillip McCrory.

Believe it or not, and despite what might immediately jump to your mind, New Orleans has a long, rich tradition of great coffee. CoolBrew has become part of that tradition, first introduced at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1993 after an initial launch several years before as the New Orleans Coffee Company. CoolBrew is still made right in Mid-City NOLA.

We’ve been late comers to the power and awesome taste of cold-brewed coffee; it’s much less acidic and in reality far better tasting that most traditionally hot-brewed coffee. She Who Must Be Obeyed is particularly impressed with the array of cold, blended drinks we’ve been able to make with ease and the coffee based BBQ sauce we’ve made with CoolBrew is astoundingly good (recipe to follow).

We’ll do a full review in the next few weeks, though at this point we’d argue that CoolBrew’s cold-brew coffees rival some of the greatest inventions known to man thus far, right there among things like velcro, the bamboo fly rod, flavored potato chips and breathable waders.
