Thirsty Thursday: Ken’s Bloody Mary

in Thirsty Thursday

Last week when I was back home in Bozeman we had a little get together.  You know, just a small gathering of friends I hadn’t seen in a while, all eating dinner and having a beer and chit chatting and having a good time.  Well, that soon evolved into a rowdy game of “Asshole”, played with cards and a fair amount of beer.  If you have never played Asshole, I would highly recommend it.  Provided you don’t have anywhere important to be the next morning/early afternoon.

The party broke up around 2am, and that next morning came a lot sooner than I would have thought.  Ugh.  It was one of those days when you lay on the couch and swear you’re never doing that again.  Shane and I had some errands to run around town, but eventually we ended up at Ken Stock’s house.  As we settled in for a good bullshit session, Ken made him and I something I have never tried before: a Bloody Mary.

Supposedly a cure-all for hangovers, I was interested to see if it actually worked.  Over talk of driftboats, flies, fishing, trout, and lots in between I sipped at the salty, hearty beverage.  At first I was not too impressed.  But I have to say, it grows on you!  And miraculously I started feeling a lot better.

The recipe seemed simple enough:

Bloody Mary Mixer (or make your own.  Depends on the severity of the hangover I suppose)
A splash of olive juice
Vodka (about that much)
Fresh squeezed lemon juice (one slice per drink)
Tabasco

Mix in shaker filled with ice and shake.  Pour into ice filled glass and serve with three olives.  Additional garnish of celery sticks, etc, optional.  Consume and enjoy.

Doing a little bit of research since my return to Washington, it would appear that there are endless variations on this classic drink.  If any of you guys have suggestions, leave them in a comment.  It is always interesting to see how the same drink can be made differently.

Thanks Ken for the drink!  We’ll have to do it again when I get back over there.
