The Vermont Chronicles: Forward Unto March

VC1Mar2It’s hard to believe it’s March. I heard the first twitter of songbirds as I walked into work the other day; somehow it was dampened by the falling snow and sub-zero wind chill.

Guess we’re all a little anxious for spring green.

I just returned to the apartment after an afternoon casting session at the local baseball fields. It’s chilly, windy, and rather grey out, but sometimes there’s an unspoken demand to get outside. Admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve spent time on my cast – it was rather embarrassing. Bundled up in pack boots and a parka, I must have looked rather idiotic practicing my double haul in the middle of a snowy baseball field. Bonus points (or would it be more negative points?) for the bit of Larabar wrapper tied on as a faux fly.

I find I’m kind of okay with that. It did the soul some good.

It was a stellar week at Orvis HQ – continuing to learn new skills and put old ones to use. New challenges, new victories and new adventures.

Away from work, it’s been a week of coming home from the office and working away. Putting a few projects to bed, hunting new ones and the day-to-day fun-ness of billing and bookkeeping.

I attended a southern Vermont Trout Unlimited chapter meeting Tuesday night; local bamboo rod maker Barry Meyer talked the group through his creative process in creating a rod. After inundating myself in that world with the Sweetgrass Rods crew, it was fascinating to see another version of the process. The more I learn about bamboo, the more I agree: Cane is Cool.

In another decided highlight of the week, I’ve come to be in possession of an Orvis Gale Force sling pack. I’ve long been in the search of a better on-the-water camera setup (using a Patagonia SubDivider right now – great for the boat, but not for hiking / wading.) This may just be what the doctor ordered. True to form, I brought it home and set to configuring it with the camera kit, playing and adjusting until I looked up and it was 2100h – I’d yet to eat dinner or check any freelance work off the list.

New toys. What can I say? I get more excited over a new camera bag than new clothing, any day of the week.

So, cheers guys, until next week. Here’s to a fast coming of spring!
