Friday Afternoon Photographers and a GoPro Hero 3 Question

GPH3forCWAnybody using the (relatively) new GoPro Hero 3 out there?

We’re just about to spring for one and were wondering what fly fisher folks were thinking about the camera.

Battery life seems to be the issue drawing the most jawboning, though obviously folks have been discussing the operating system (much improved it appears after the first post-release firmware update), large file sizes and overheating issues as well.

Overall looks like a nifty piece of gear.

Several of our favorite photographers have updated their sites (or are in progress) or posted some great stuff lately. Here’s a few you shouldn’t miss…

Adam Barker, one of our fav fly fishing / outdoor / mountain / skiing / all around photographers based out of SLC recently published a very good post on his blog – We’re Back. Well worth a read for those thinking I’ll kick the cubicle gig this year and become a professional photographer. And AB’s blog is full of useful tips and advice.

Bryan Gregson has recently updated his site, is cranking out great work as always and blogging a bit. BG is heavily involved in the Utah Access fight ongoing.

Jimmy Chin, arguably the most prolific and talented climbing photographer and videographer in the game today has updated his site recently as well. Not a lot fishy here but the mountain imagery is stunning.

And finally, Zack Williams, friend and champion fly caster has just returned from 5 weeks in Argentina. He’s presenting a slide show of his trip at the Gig Harbor Fly Shop tomorrow morning at 10AM. This was Zack’s second time down and he and Kelly hit some places most anglers don’t see. Well worth a trip in if you’re close by.

I’m a local news videographer in New York and have access to a damned nice array of gear. The Go Pro H3 has been a kick to use for my own stuff. File sizes are a big large, particularly for extended time lapse work, though easily manageable in any non-linear editing program.

The higher resolution images are very useful, particularly considering what this camera is and it’s intended uses. Controls aren’t that difficult at all and there’s no issue with the online manual; the complaints you’re reading reflect much more a stupid general user than a camera flaw. Sound recording sucks but that’s not what this camera is all about.

Overall a worthy upgrade in their line and a something that should be in most pro’s / semi-pro’s bags.

Dig the site guys; keep up the good work.

I got a GoPro 3 for my birthday recently but haven’t used it that much. I went out in my kayak a week ago and brought it with me. I “thought” I had it charged but once I got out there I noticed the battery was almost dead. I’ll need to make sure I charge it before I go next time so I can really see how well the batteries last. I did pick up a spare battery just in case. I also have a GoPro 2 so maybe I’ll get them both charged and do some testing to see which one lasts longer.

The quality seems better than the GoPro 2 though so I’m happy about that. Here’s the video from that trip, just caught one small bass but its better than getting skunked!
