Want The Title Of America’s Top Hooker?

It was bound to happen at some point.  TV’s fascination with “reality” shows and strange competitions has finally reached into the realm of angling.  During my morning internet news sweep, I came across a piece on Moldy Chum about a new show called “Top Hooker”.

If you didn’t know the context, that title might make you wonder a bit.  TV being TV, it very well could mean a couple things.  Have no fear, it is about fishing.  The show is being produced by Pilgrim Studios, the same producers of Top Shot, Dirty Jobs, and The Ultimate Fighter. It will air on Animal Planet sometime next year.

The producers are seeking fishermen from all walks of life, and all manners of fishing.  Hell, they are even looking for fly fishermen.  They claim the show will feature exciting and intense challenges on the rivers, lakes, and streams of America, as well as the open ocean.

You can apply here, and from reading their web page sounds like you better apply early.

Shows like this give me mixed feelings.  Sure, it will be interesting to see the different types of fishermen all competing together, with their different styles and tactics.  But fishing at its core is not about competition.  Fly fishing certainly isn’t.  For me it is about getting away from it all, spending time with good friends in beautiful places.

On the other hand, since so many people are constantly plugging into TV and especially reality shows, maybe a show such as this will encourage people to pull their heads out of their ass and get outside and do something.  If even one person watching this show goes fishing because of it, then I would call that a success.
