I have an acquaintance who knows his way around adult beverages.
He’s an incredibly nice guy, could talk a gate off its hinges and he likes to eat. Our kinda hombre.
My friend knows that we fancy spicy foods and all the good things that go hand in hand with great edibles.
When I saw him this week he mentioned that he’d just picked up a 20 pound bag of fresh, and he meant just-off-the-tree-orchard-fresh pink grapefruit from The Valley (the Rio Grande Valley).
The he got this far off look in his eye and started talking about making Habanero Grapefruit Margaritas for the New Year’s football weekend.
It didn’t take a lot of arm twisting to get the recipe.
By the way, another friend recently recommended we try Puro Verde’s Tequila Reposado. It won Tequila.net’s 2011 ‘Best of the Best’ award and was also named the Best Organic Tequila for the year. It’s good.
4 cups good quality tequila
2-4 habanero chiles, halved, seeds in
6 cups fresh pink grapefruit juice
Kosher salt
Spike the tequila. Mix the tequila and the habaneros in a pitcher and let steep for at least three hours. The longer you go, the spicier / hotter your tequila becomes. Remove the chiles; they’d be perfect to use in a mango-habanero salsa though you’re done with them now. Chill. (Of note – we love the fruity heat of habaneros – but they are damned spicy. Might want to try your first run using 1/2 habanero for every cup of tequila….)
Salt and mix. Salt the rims of your chosen glasses (we us small Mason jars) and fill with ice. Pour the grapefruit juice into the tequila, add some ice, stir well.
Enjoy this one.

That sounds darn tasty. Might have to make one tonight.
I’m about to head out to the store for habaneros myself…..
I believe your word would be ‘nifty’.
Actually this is damned nifty. Habaneros steeping right now.
