We’ve been working on this one for a few months now; things are beginning to come together.
The challenge: A few of us here at Chi Wulff own a vintage 1983 CJ7 sitting in Bozeman. We need to move it down to Texas for a frame off rebuild. The jeep runs well enough, though the original engine (slightly modified), transfer case and tranny have 28 years of wear and tear on them. She leaks oil, the gas gauge failed in 2006 and the soft top (if not the original) is literally coming apart at the seams as the thread used to sew it together disintegrates before our eyes. And 45 miles per hour is about her maximum safe open road speed and she climbs hills at a snail’s pace.
The less obvious solution: Drive it down.
The nuts and bolts: Two fly fishermen. Fish every day. Backroads only. Fish all fishable water en route. Two weeks. Target and treasure small waters and native fish. Seek out local notables along the way. HD video. Blog updates en route. Drive no more than 150 miles per day. Survive. Roughly 2100 miles.
Drive window: Working on it; start date sometime in late July or August.
The 11 Commandments for The Drive
- Thou shall fish every day.
- Thou shall strive to fish every fishable water en route.
- Thou shall treasure smaller waters.
- Thou shall treasure native fish.
- Thou shall drive no more than 15o miles per day.
- Thou shall record only HD video.
- Thou shall drive only on back roads.
- Thou shall not push the Jeep beyond 45 miles per hour.
- Thou shall seek out local expertise, fly shops and good fellowship.
- Thou shall not discharge thy firearms unless absolutely necessary.
- Thou shall survive without a radio in the jeep.
More to come.

Cool trip plan. Better water if you’ll head south out of Jackson and drive down the Canyon, then fish the Salt and other waters around Thayne, hit the Green in various locations, then cut into western Colorado. I’ll go if one of you can’t make it.
Lot’s of great small water in western Colorado that hasn’t had a lot of attention. Don’t give it too much dammit.
The trip sounds great, i’ll show you guys around the western slope if your interested
That SHALL be an amazing trip.
Appreciate the comments and the emails.
We’ve pulled out the crayons and are actually making what passes for genuine plans in our world now.
