Fall has hit the Madison. The Lower has woken back up, the Upper is still kicking ass, and the river is in all around great shape.
Fishing the Lower these days is pretty easy. Crawfish, streamers, sculpins, big princes and stonefly nymphs are all taking fish. Look for a pretty good Baetis hatch in the afternoons, from about 1-4 most days. Cloudy days are going to fish the best.
The Upper is still producing lots of bigger fish. Big flies are the ticket. Mega-princes, stonefly nymphs, soft hackles and streamers are the best patterns these days. Anything big and buggy looking will do well also. The Baetis are out in the afternoons, bring some little bitty dries.
The river between the lakes and above Hebgen has been amazing. Lots of big browns have been taken on streamers and larger nymphs. Morning and evening is the best time to hunt for one of these pigs, but we have seen bruisers get caught all day. No matter where you go on the Madison, it is going to be pretty good.
