Fall is here in full force and the rivers are feeling it. Rock Creek has reached its fall patterns, with some dries in the afternoon but most of the action taking place subsurface. There is still a fair amount of water in the creek these days, with flows still above the 80th percentile.
If you feel the need to fish dries, wait for the Baetis and mahogany hatches in the afternoon. They are the best between noon and four. Cloudy days will be much better for these hatches. I have heard several buddies of mine talking about using smaller (14 and smaller) attractors with pretty good success. As much as I love fishing the BWO hatches, I find it hard to see those little dries anymore. Damn old eyes.
Instead, I find swinging soft hackles during the BWO hatch to work very well. Down and across with a couple flies of varying size is incredibly effective. Nymph patterns such as san juan worms, princes, pheasant tails and the like are working well all day long. Streamers have been most effective in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. Black, olive and white are the hot colors at this time.
