Can’t believe how uncrowded the river has been of late.
Some of the neighbors think the November like cold showing up in early October has flushed a lot of the softies off the river; maybe so. Elk have been moving down this week and there’s bird hunting to do too. October is a busy time in the neighborhood.
From what we’ve seen and heard this week, folks aren’t boating 50 fish in a day, but persistent work with streamers is producing some nice fish, and there have been BWOs out in the cloud cover. Whitefish are still a nuisance but not as much so as a couple of weeks ago.
This is still ‘two-rod’ time on the Yellowstone: an eight or nine weight rig to pitch streamers as big as you dare, and a five or six to heave those olives out there (mind the wind).
The big issue for the next few days will be the weather – this morning’s forecast looks pretty damned winter like if you ask me (and it’s 16 and snowing like crazy right now), though we’re still planning an afternoon float over here on Sunday….

Mark,
I was head hunting. I camped for two nights in this shit and game damn close to netting the fish of my life (SOB came unbuttoned at last minute). The streamer fishing was unreal to say the least. Not many have the legs to fish the section I work this time of year. Needless to say I fished the stone for 2 1/2 days and didn’t see a soul…I love hunting season and bad weather!
wahoo.
