Yellowstone River Fly Fishing Report 2 October 2009: Now You’re Talkin’…..

Several friends who have been on the river earlier in the week reported loads of whitefish but not much else.  The guys at Fins and Feathers here in Bozeman have even called it the Yellowstone’s ‘transitional funk’ (it does sound like an interesting name for a band….).

That will be changing now with several days of cooler weather under our collective belts.  This is a great time on the ‘Stone – load up with a 8 or 9 weight streamer rod and throw the big stuff, and keep a 5 or 6 weight handy to throw Baetis dries to rising fish – which there should be more and more of.

Guys have even been throwing some egg patterns to tease the browns that are snagging whitefish eggs in the riffles, and nymphing hasn’t been too bad in the mornings.

After this weekend’s weather the river should settle into a much more friendly pattern, and with the crowds already waning, things are looking much better for the next few weeks.
