Missouri River Fly Fishing Report 2 October 2009: Finally Fall (read – Dry Fly Time)…

mrschoke10209Finally the choking grip of what seemed like the never ending summer has been broken and fall has managed to elbow its way into Missouri River country.

Like most of Montana we’ve been enjoying some nice cool weather since the transition on Wednesday – days in the fifties are a damn sight better than the mid-80s.

Though it’s not as good as it probably will be in the next few weeks, there are lot more heads looking up here of late – looking at Pseudos, caddis, midges, Callibaetis and even a few BWOs, though the olives probably won’t really be rolling for a week or more.

I’m a died in the wool, hardcore caddis fan.  There are fewer October Caddis out than the little brown caddis, but they’re out there.

Nymphing is still going strong, streamers should be coming on in the next few weeks, though the river remains pretty damned weedy.

Watch the weather this weekend too – there’s another system coming in that should bring some rain and cooler weather; snow should be south and west of us.

Steve – at breakfast this morning my lovely wife blurted out that you are obtuse. What the hell?
