Firehole River Fly Fishing Report 21 September 2009: Caddis Are Still King…..

loraragcrwn921To be brutally honest I haven’t been in the main body of the Park for a week, and in particular haven’t spent any time on one of my favorite fall season rivers – The Firehole.

One reason is that life has been a bit busy of late; one reason is that last week was much more like summer than the second week of September should be.

The word is that the river has been fishing decently during the Caddis window in the later afternoon and early evening.  There are some other bugs around as well – midges and a Baetis or two, but we’re all looking for the cool, overcast weather that will really drive the Baetis over here.

It’s cool this morning at about 7 (31 in Bozeman at my place and 32 in West Yellowstone per The Weather Underground); we’ll see the 80s in a day or two and WY will be back in the 7o’s.  There wasn’t much in terms of moisture as yesterday’s storm moved through and there’s not much in terms of clouds forecast for the week.

We’ll all enjoy Indian Summer while it lasts…..though the Firehole is not at its fall prime just yet.
