This may be one of the first weeks since I started writing here at Chi Wulff in April that I don’t have much that’s really new to say about the river.
Conditions on the river are still pretty typical for this time of year.
There are still Tricos in the morning; it’s not that tough finding sippers that will show a real interest in your perfectly presented spinner, though there haven’t been as many heads around as all of us would like to see.
I’m typically having my boat start to nymph when either the Tricos or my clients’ patience peters out; nymphing will still put you on the most fish.
There are plenty of folks wanted to throw hoppers and ants, and it’s not a bad idea, you just won’t be boating 40 fish if that’s going to be your approach all day.
Better fall days aren’t that far off though there’s lots of sun and high 7os / low 80s in the forecast for the next week or so.
There is a fire burning over on the north / west side of Holter, now over 3000 acres. Contrary to some rumors that have been floating around, it is nowhere near the upper river and has no impact on fishing. Heads up, the reports are it was human caused and the area is drying out…

Think clouds.
