These pics were all taken last night by Jess (she’s now absolutely consumed by the mental illness that is photography and shooting hundreds of pics per day around the neighborhood). The learning curve with today’s digital photography options is astoundingly different that the days of shooting Kodachrome and Ektachrome and painstakingly critiquing slides.
The pic above was one of number of very nice fish (including his largest ever caught on the Gallatin – just a tad over 18 inches) that Jake teased out of an upper Gallatin (just below the Park) pool with Gray Drakes last night. Being younger and more nimble he beat Jess and I to the better water. Damn.
Jake and I both started off optimistically throwing bugs we thought would reasonably mimic the rare Spruce Moth we observed lurching over the water. Nothing doing.
There were a variety of mayflies coming off in a number of different sizes – Jake had the good fortune of Drakes in his pool, my bugs ended up being very small olives (22ish) and Mahoganies in the 16-18 range – much easier on my less than nimble eyesight in transitional light.

The most fun fish of the night was this jumping bow who was sipping Mahoganies at the head of the ‘leftover’ pool I was assigned to…..

Pics sized for display in a blog don’t quite cut it, do they?
