September 2009

Stuck in the office here in Bozeman on what should be the first real BWO day of the fall season.  Damn. A quick scan of some of my favorite sites during an early lunch (waiting on ad copy for further design work) led to some further serious time wasting and discovery of a new, interesting [...]

This last day of September has brought with it fall.  As I am looking out my window right now, it is snowing.  And snowing pretty hard.  Fortunately, there is not as much snow on the ground as the above picture, taken a few winters ago in West Yellowstone.  Its a start, though.  Kind of strange to [...]

The Madison in the Park has enjoyed one of the better Septembers in recent memory in terms of fun and productive fishing – there have been good numbers of runners (rainbows and browns) and active fishing despite the bright sunshine dominating the weather for almost the entire month. Speaking of weather – it has changed [...]

Finally, the forecast shows something that we want to see!  From tomorrow on through the rest of the week temperatures are going to come down quite a bit and there is a possibility of rain and/or snow.  The fall weather is going to kick things into high gear on the rivers. BWOs are the main [...]

Congrats to Colleen S. and her first real fish on the fly. May there be many more, and they do come easier from this point forward.

I mentioned several days ago we’d run down to Jackson late last week and caught the now pretty damned impressive Arnica fire in YNP just as it blew up.  We were able to snag some nifty pics, some of which just might end up in Fish Can’t Read or in a series here on the [...]

Wednesday will likely be one of those days Firehole fans been looking for – a long awaited cool, cloudy and rainy day. The Firehole has been quite fishable given the smattering of Baetis coming off and fairly robust White Miller Caddis hatches coming off on the sunny warm days that have graced the neighborhood for [...]

The Clark Fork is fishing decently these days; to be honest none of my crew was able to get out on the water this weekend (my daughter was in Boise on business with the family), and I was on the Missouri with friends. Sounds like the upper most and lower most sections of the river [...]

The Beaverhead needs a week or so of consistent cool weather before it really picks back up.  The fishing has been pretty decent, but is only going to get better later this fall.  The fish are being picky, and they can pull it off with all the food choices open to them right now. The [...]

Lot’s of folks who love to fish the Big Hole are looking forward to the weather change due this week – the forecast looks better and better every time I look at it. The forecast for Divide looks a lot like the rest of the neighborhood, sunny today and tomorrow with temps still unseasonably warm, [...]

Just back from a couple of days out and about – the One Who Must Be Obeyed and I ran down to Jackson and Grand Teton on Thursday;  we happened to catch the Arnica Fire burning in YNP just as it blew up on the morning of the 24th.  I’ll throw some more pics up [...]

We have had more summer weather in September than any other month of the year this year.  It should be nice and cool this time of year, not as hot as it has been.  Down in the Park it hasn’t been all that bad, just not as cool as it needs to be.  Things should start [...]

Rock Creek is caught in that interesting in-between place.  It is not quite fall yet, despite what the calendar says.  Temps have been in the 80s and 90s, which is very unseasonable for this area.   Fishing hasn’t been too bad.  There have been hatches of BWOs, mahoganies, and October Caddis.  Once the weather cools [...]

The Gallatin is starting to shift toward her fall pattern.  Pretty soon you won’t have to worry about getting up at 5 am to make it to the river.  The really great morning fishing is starting after the sun is up and has warmed the water. The upper river, in the canyon, still has a [...]

One of the Neighbors Dropped In….

Rigging on the Firehole late Wednesday afternoon we noticed a small bull bison had drifted in out of the trees just across the road from the car. Neither party flinched as we rigged and he grazed on down the road – there were white miller caddis coming off and we sure as hell weren’t leaving…..
