Flows on the Upper Madison have dropped quite a bit since last week. As of this morning, the river was at just below 940 cfs, down from almost 1,300 a few days ago. The lower flows are going to make a couple of section tricky for floaters, but fishing is still good.
Unless you are going to hike back into Bear Trap, don’t even bother with the Lower for a few more weeks.
Hoppers have been the go to fly on the Upper lately. A friend of mine is camping out at Varney for three days and plans to throw nothing but terrestrials. Mayflies have been coming off mornings and evenings, with caddis as well in the evenings. Spruce Moths are also still drawing strikes. Fish the deeper runs out in the middle of the river for the bigger fish.
