August 2009

The Gardner is in pretty good shape for this time of year.  Won’t be too much longer before the fall hatches start up and the fishing really gets good.  It is hard to believe it is already the end of August.  Where did our summer go? The main menu item on the Gardner is hoppers.  [...]

The Clark Fork is trying to turn the corner to fish a bit more it does in the fall, though I’m not sure the weather is going to cooperate much this week. Yesterday’s clouds were welcome, and did produce a more robust (nifty word, eh?) mayfly hatch from what I hear along most of the [...]

Frankly there are a lot of places in and around the Park that offer much better fishing right (consider the Gallatin for example my friends), though we seem to get inquiries about the Firehole endlessly during the season. Morning water temps even on the lower Firehole have been looking better; this past week temps have [...]

The Big Hole continues to fish quite well as summer comes to an end. Flows have been steady, there are lots of bugs and fewer fishermen than a few weeks ago, and the weather, while windy, has been most cooperative with light overcast most of the past few days. There are still Spruce Moths early, [...]

Unlike most recent years, there is still a lot of water in the Beaverhead.  Flows out of Yellowtail Dam are slightly below 500 cfs as of this morning, well above average for this time of year.  This only means good things from a fishing point of view. There are a lot of different bugs on [...]

I love years like this one.  They don’t come along often, but when they do be ready to take advantage of them.  Everything just falls into place on years like this.  Take Rock Creek, for example.  This year has been great, and it will continue well into the fall.  Flows have been steadily dropping, down [...]

Fishing on the northeast corner waters is still pretty much a “wow” experience. While general tourist traffic in the Park is definitely on the downswing, there are still impressive crowds of intent fly anglers plying the Soda Butte and its neighbors. Flows are very healthy for this time of year, and in addition to the [...]

Pretty much ditto what you’ve just read about Soda. Hot damn.

From the non-fly fishing world comes an interesting read today. Real world responsibilities require that I spend a bit of my time everyday attending to the black hole that is the world of economics and finance.   Forays into the world of economics and finance are most often (in my experience) fraught with conflicting opinions, [...]

While some of my friends describe me as living a little recklessly now, I was even more reckless in my younger days.  My dad had a saying that it seems like he told me every day back then – don’t believe everything you hear.  (He also used to tell me don’t be a dumbass almost [...]

The plug of mud pushed into the system from the Lamar finally rolled through the better part of the valley by yesterday, and the river has come back to fine form. The Yellowstone has been offering up some of the best dry fly and hopper fishing that we’ve seen in a few years.  The game [...]

Well worth a view now and again.  Sounds quite a bit different from much of what politico’s proffer today….

After a huge spike in flows as the result of heavy rain earlier in the week, the Lamar has settled back down.  The rain pushed some mud into the river, but all that has passed on down.  Flows are back in the 250 cfs range, which is damn near perfect for this time of year. [...]

Flows on the Blackfoot have been dropping on a rapid basis.  Looking at the flow chart this morning, it is an impressive downward trend.  The lower water might make floating a little tricky, especially up high, but it is good news for us wade fishermen. I have been hearing some reports of October Caddis on [...]
