A Jump Ahead at Light Speed

Being fairly avid fly fisher folk, we tend to scrimp, save, hoard, and barter for new gear related to fishing first, river running second, and other outdoor related stuff third.

Other life needs such as shelter, vehicles, food, computers, etc. are ranked on a much lower scale.  This has been known to engender some element of concern and conflict with those in our immediate environments who are not so intimately infatuated with the outdoors, flowing rivers, and fresh air.

It became increasingly apparent over the past year that for those of us involved with Dry Fly Media – namely Jake and I among the Chi Wulff team –  our digital camera was woefully inadequate for what we were trying to accomplish photographically.

After several hundred hours of research over the past months, we were able to convince our partners at Dry Fly to spring for a heavy hitter in the DSLR world – a Canon 5D Mark II.   We looked very hard at major competitors and cost points, though felt the Canon 5D would serve our needs more ably.

It has finally landed on the doorstep this week along with 24-70 and 70-300 zooms and the bare minimum of requisite gear to keep it safe and secure.

Yep – it’s far more machine that we ever dreamed of, and it is humbling to even hold in hand and ponder all the potential therein.  It’s also damned humbling to consider that I’m probably holding a camera that is for all intents and purposes smarter than I am.

We’ll be sharing more about the camera and its function over the next several months, and hopefully some enhanced photography as well.
