What a difference a single week can make in the life of a river in Yellowstone.
The long, cool, wet spring weather we’ve enjoyed for the past couple of months is now giving way to summer like weather.
Jake and I had a great afternoon on the Firehole last Friday; air temps were in the low fifties dropping to the high forties on that stormy afternoon, and the residents of the river were going crazy as Caddis came off in the rain.
We were in the Park yesterday afternoon on the Nez Perce (yep, it was nice; nope, I’m not giving details today to keep a promise to a friend who tipped us off to a great place…) and noted as we drove out around 730 healthy numbers of Caddis coming off without a fish in sight. Stopping to check water temps right about the Firehole Picnic area was a surprise – water temps were still in the 76 to 77 degree range. Wow.
The water temperature gage data (taken near the confluence) is pretty impressive as well…..

It is about time for the Firehole to enter her summer doldrums, though above Midway in the mornings and later evenings will probably hold for a few more days. She won’t be back in prime shape until the fall – pending weather…..
