Henry’s Fork Fly Fishing Report 30 June 2009: Don’t Get Frustrated – Head South

We’ve been running around like chickens with our heads off the past week or so and have not been down on the lower Henry’s as we’d planned to do around the 15th.  Where the hell has the month of June gone?

Jake has overheard some grousing (and worse) in his store of late regarding the Henry’s Fork – mainly from folks visiting the neighborhood – folks who apparently figured they’d waltz onto the river at Last Chance and catch a boatload of fish on Green Drakes like they do in the videos.

As anyone who has wandered these fabled waters knows – that’s not the way it happens.

From what our best contacts have shared over the past few days, the most consistent fishing continues on the lower river – basically below Ashton.  There have been PMDs and Green Drakes during the mornings with very strong Caddis hatches in the later afternoons and evenings; still a few Golden Stones as well.

There are also gray Drakes coming off (mostly lower river) in the evening.

The word we’re hearing from Last Chance and Harriman is that you’d better bring you’re A-game, fine tippets, a steady hand, and a large load of patience.

Finally, flows remain skinny and the Box is very wadable – watch for various and sundry hatches but my money is still on stone fly and big attractor nymphs here…..
