Henry’s Fork Fly Fishing Report 16 June 2009: Warming Up (In More Ways Than One)

in River - Henry's Fork

grdrk60916There are a few noteworthy things to ponder when considering the Henry’s Fork over the next week or so.

First of all the Harriman stretch opens next Monday on the 15th; there are folks who travel in from all over the world to enjoy the spectacle and the Green Drakes. If you’ve not seen it – it is one of those events you have to experience at least once in your lifetime.

Reports we’ve gotten over the past few days suggest the lower river is really turning on at this point – hatch wise PMDs, midges, Golden stones, Sallies, and Caddis are attracting the bulk of the attention, though both the green and gray Drakes are starting.

Talking to our best HF resource yesterday, she said the Green Drakes have been strongest Warm River to Ashton, and Grays are strongest Chester to Ashton. They’ll be moving up and will be more prolific as the weather warms a bit later in the week.

The big stoneflies have pretty much moved through, though offering one now and again still isn’t a bad idea, especially in the Box where low flows are allowing good access at this point. There still aren’t many waters in the neighborhood where flows are running below seasonal averages. (Flow chart from this morning just to prove it).

I don’t think you’ll be seeing the Green Drake in the picture. Maybe at Henryville in Pennsylvania but not Henry’s Fork in Idaho.

Alan, you’re right – I couldn’t find a high res pic of a ‘local’ Green Drake in my archives that I was happy with. We’ll get some pics this weekend for you…..

I assumed you knew and were just checking to see if anyone was paying attention. Hope to get some pictures of your local bugs in a few weeks myself.
