Brownlining in Bozeman?

Is it possible to brownline in Bozeman?  Perhaps not quite to the standards of Singlebarbed and the Fat Guys Fly Fishing, but it can be done.  Take the Bozeman Pond for example.  After work last night, my buddy Shane and I decided to head on down there and throw for some flies for a few hours.

I had never been before but had heard many stories about the pond.  Full of little panfish, bass and trout, the pond provides a nice outlet for fishing fever when the rivers are blown out.  The fact that it sits about three minutes out the front door helps a lot too.

The Bozeman Pond is neither very big nor deep, but it provides a great habitat for lots of little fish.  Even with just a cursory glance into the water, you can see pods of fish moving around all over the place.

Shane had tied up some panfish flies the night before and was gracious enough to share some with me.  Casting the fat, brightly colored flies into the water and quickly stripping them back in is quite a change from fishing trout streams.  It was frustrating to watch several fish follow the fly all the way back in and then loose interest.  Swearing at the fish and/or encouraging the fish to eat the fly doesn’t help anything, but it makes you feel better.

Shane caught what we decided to dub the “Bozeman Pond Grand Slam” consisting of bass, perch, trout and bluegill.  As you can see from the pictures below, the fish are not really big in the pond, but they are still lots of fun.  Shane had his game face on.

The highlight of the night was a couple of beered up bimbos who caught a turtle on a worm.  We heard muffled words of shock and excitement and then one of them peeked their head around the corner and asked “can you guys give us hand?”.  We were able to free the turtle.

I know I’ll be back out there, and will be exploring some of the other local ponds while the rivers are running high and muddy.  What a great way to spend an evening.
