Firehole River Fly Fishing Report 28 May 2009: Better Every Day and Swinging Soft Hackles

tupsindespsmall509Granted, we (I) spend probably too much time writing about the Firehole; it is and shall remain one of my favorite rivers on the face of the planet. It will never be a ‘trophy fish’ water – but you have to admit, there aren’t many like it around.

Water levels are still high, though the daily peaks are now in the 800 cfs range versus around a 1000; warmer temps due for the next four days may change that a bit until it cools back off on Monday. Clarity is improving, particularly above the Nez Perce confluence.

Firehole fanatics should note that PMDs are coming on now, typically around noon or later, with BWOs as well. The softhackpartyellowsmall1Firehole over the past few years has rekindled my faith in swinging soft hackles, and they’re working now, as well as the appropriate dries. Nit pickin’ entomologist types note that three different caddis species (Hydropscyhe, Glossosoma, Necopscyhe) have been noted later in the day.

Streamers are probably still in play in the mornings and in more stained water.

Pending how quickly true summer sets up housekeeping the Park, there’s a month or 6 weeks of fine Firehole fly fishing to be had before the summer doldrums set in.
