Henry’s Fork Fly Fishing Report 26 May 2009: Did I Hear the Word Stonefly???

in River - Henry's Fork

littleorangestimA few intrepid neighbors chose to eschew the opening day crowds in Yellowstone (more in a bit) and headed down to the lower Henry’s Fork to chase stoneflies – yes, stoneflies.

The stonefly army has emerged on the stretch below the Ashton Dam; as you’d expect early in the game big bad stonefly nymphs are the most productive, though more than one slobbering friend told me yesterday they were taking fish on dries as well.   Whether or not that was really true over the weekend, it should be true later this week.  Caddis (dries, emergers, and nymphs) were in play down there as well.

The Box apparently fished best on nymphs and streamers over the opening weekend and Warm River to Ashton was stained by tribs but still fished as well.

Stoneflies beginning to move will be the story over here over the next several weeks, and we may post an extra report or two to keep you up to date on the hatch movement.

The Fall River is dirty and making for tough sledding below Chester dam; that won’t change for a while.
