If Spock were standing with you today analyzing the opening day potential of the Yellowstone River in the Park, he’d damned well probably say ‘interesting’.
As you’d expect for this time of year and given the past week’s weather, flows have been gradually increasing all week out of the still closed to fishing (15 June) Yellowstone Lake.

As you’d expect for this time of year and given the past week’s weather, from the Black Canyon and down the river is a frothing chocolate milkshake.
What you might not expect to hear is that the river in the lower third or so of the Grand Canyon, while high and getting higher by the day, isn’t in all that bad of shape. This will water very little pressured today, and big stonefly nymphs and big, ugly attractor nymphs will induced giggles and shouts fishing thoughtfully in the seams. Might even see a BWO or Caddis or two.
It won’t last long, so hitch up those hiking boots and go to it.
Fish long and prosper.
